A New Law
By Derek Webb
off of:  Mockingbird

and don't teach me about politics and government
just tell me who to vote for
and don't teach me about truth and beauty
no, just label my music
and don't teach me how to live like a free man
no, just give me a new law

I don't wanna know if the answers aren't easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me

i want a new law
i want a new law
just give me that new law

and don't teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice
and don't teach me about Loving my enemies
and don't teach me how to listen to The Spirit
no, just give me a new law

i don't wanna know if the answers aren't easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me

i want a new law
i want a new law
just give me that new law

'cause what's the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything
so do not be afraid

do not be afraid

or.. rather, "do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid. do not be afraid.  do not be afraid."

Man, i need to hear that even more than the crazy amount of times he says it.  great effect.

Derek played this in concert Saturday night and nobody quite knew what to do with it.  That, and I think the endless repetition of "do not be afraid" at the end of the song just gets really old.

Friday night in Elkhorn it went over well, and I love the ending, perfect for that song, perfect for that subject matter.

when you hear the studio version, it's much better.

sillyjoe (kind of felt the same way when he heard it live with just derek and cason)

The instrumentation on this song might be my favorite of any song on the CD. The piano, in particular, has great effect.

I can see where the repeated "Do not be afraid" could be weird live; on the CD, though, it works (at least for me).
