Something tells me that when people really get ahold of it, this'll be an AYOR topic, not a Derek topic.

Here are the lyrics:

My Enemies Are Men Like Me
Derek Webb

I have come to give you life
And to show you how to live it
I have come to make things right
To heal their ears and show you how to forgive them

Cause I would rather die
I would rather die
I would rather die than to take your life

Cause how can I kill the ones I’m supposed to love
My enemies are men like me
So I will protest the sword if it’s not wielded well
Cause my enemies are men like me

Peace by way of war
Is like purity by way of fornication
It’s like telling someone murder is wrong
And then showing them by way of execution

And I would rather die
I would rather die
I would rather die than to take your life

Cause how can I kill the ones I’m supposed to love
My enemies are men like me
So I will protest the sword if it’s not wielded well
Cause my enemies are men like me

When justice is bought and sold just like weapons of war
Oh, the ones who always pay are the poorest of the poor

So how can I kill the ones I’m supposed to love
My enemies are men like me
So I will protest the sword if it’s not wielded well
Cause my enemies are men like me

Eh....  strong words, but I'm not totally jiving with them yet.

I realize they come out of Derek's new kind of social gospel vibe...  the whole album screams that.  But I'm a bit confused, because his repeated line is

"So I will protest the sword if it’s not wielded well
Cause my enemies are men like me"

But to me, the whole song sounds like it's "protesting the sword" under pretty much any circumstances.  Does that make sense?  Maybe I'm just not ready for a social protest album.  I dunno!

like i've said before, this album will challenge you in places you need to be challenged in...regardless of what side fo the issue you eventually fall on.

though many of my reformed friends may be jumping off the bus, it will be nice to agree with derek more than ever before as one who is not reformed...

 Very Happy

I wondered when all that Tom Waits listening Derek does was coming home to roost ... and I think this is that album.  Wink
