Geoff,
I looked and looked for someone to possibly answer this question, and nothing. So yeah i'm starting a new post, with the hope someone might be able to help me understand this song:

Take to the World
(words and music by aaron tate)

go in peace to love and to serve
let your ears ring long with what you’ve heard
and may the bread on your tongue
leave a trail of crumbs
to lead the hungry back to the place that you are from

(chorus)
and take to the world this love, hope and faith
take to the world this rare, relentless grace
and like the three in one
know you must become what you want to save
‘cause that’s still the way
He takes to the world

go, and go far
take light deep in the dark
believe what’s true
He uses all, even you

(chorus)

i think this is one of my favorite songs, period. but that line troubled me. what exactly does "become who you want to save" . my first thought was if you ar raeaching out the grudge crowd, be grundy. but then the more i thought about it, i am assuming *bad iidea* that aaron wrote it to mean, be yourself. don't be someone else for the sake of bringing souls into the kingdom of God. because all we do is plant seeds while God waters the seeeds and allows them to grow.

thoughts?

If you're trying to save fisherman, you gotta be like fisherman.  You don't have to be JUST like them, but there has to be a fundamental level on which you relate.

I think he's just making a point that God took to the world as a human in Christ.  So in that way.. God became that which he wished to save.. he became human.

he took to the world with love hope and faith and rare relentless grace and he did all this as a human.. facing the same emotions and obstacles we face.

to quote Rob Bass.. he faced "Joy.. and pain.. sunshine.. and rain"

trey ( ok.. so Rob Bass wasnt talking about Jesus.. but hey.. if the analogous shoe fits.. wear it..)  Laughing

Incarnation is the big fancy theological word for that line.

And, I think that album would have been greatly improved (not that it needed much improving) if that song was the last song.  Such a great benedicition.

Cue the Napoleon Dynamite:  "That's probably like the sweeeetest thing ever."

One thing that sucks about living in the Pacific NW... very, very few Derek, Caedmon's, Peterson, etc., etc. concerts.

I'm to lazy to go downstairs and look, but I believe it is the last track on the House Show CD.

Well... since Tate wrote it based on an Episcopal benediction that would make sense  Wink

I think I figured out what he's talking about.  I just downloaded this show: http://www.indieriver.net/details.php?id=76  and Derek goes from TTTW into "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?"
