Went to the Ft. Worth show last night and heard a song that according to Derek he had only played one other time in concert the previous night.  The song was called "Rich Young Ruler" presumably after the rich young man who asks Christ "What must I do to inherit the kingdom of heaven?"  As much as I thought King and a Kingdom was a song to stir the pot and touch on places that christian songs rarely dare to venture, I thought this song was even more prophetic (Yes, I realize that is a strong word, but I think it's appropriate for this song.)

I could try to remember the lyrics but I'm sure I would butcher them so I'll spare you all from that.  It starts with a really nice dual guitar part between Derek and Sandra and the song repeats the line "I want the things you just can't give me" several times.  If anyone somehow has the lyrics (or even better a bootleg) I would be much obliged.  Derek's new album can't get here fast enough.

Here are the lyrics as far as I could tell......

Poverty
Is so hard to see
When it’s only on your TV
Or 20 miles across town

Where we’re all living so good
We moved out of Jesus’ neighborhood
Where He’s hungry and not feeling so good
For going through our trash

He says “More than just your cash and coin
I want your time, I want your voice
I want the things you just can’t give me”

“So what must we do
Here in the west we want to follow you
We speak the language and keep all the rules
Even a few that we made up”

“So come and follow me
Sell  your house, sell your SUV
Sell your stocks, sell your security
Give it to the poor”

“What is this, hey what’s the deal
I don’t sleep around and I don’t steal
I want the things you just can’t give me
I want the things you just can’t give me”

“Cuz what you do to the least of these
My brothers you have done it to me
Cuz I want the things you just can’t give me
I want the things you just can’t give me”

Thanks a lot for posting those!

(<--- Hoping a bootleg was responsible for these lyrics so he can hear this song again soon)

I can't wait to hear it!
Do you think he'll play it at some of his future shows?

I totally feel what he's singing about. Totally.

HOWEVER, I'm really growing tired of "Controversial Derek".

He played that in Nov. when I saw him.

He only plays it at NC shows... maybe you should come to one?  Razz

and FTR, I don't see this song as being "Controversy". I think it's just more or less a modern twist on that passage.

Derek is not tired of being controversial.  That's clear from the interview I did with him.  He wants to challenge people.

I'm good with that.

Geof, I'm sure that you are totally right.

no team should ever celebrate being the nl central champs (st. louis included) thats like bragging that you made it 2 second base with a hooker.

I think the man is seeing his musicianship as a ministry right now, not just a vocation. So, I doubt we're going to see a lot of neutral, everyday life songs from him at this point, or maybe ever again. He's doing what he believes God's laid out for him to do. I don't think he's intentionally trying to remain "edgy" to keep his fanbase drooling over him. He's seeing issues in the church and writing songs that confront the church on those issues.

I miss Thankful and The Church.

I like controversial Derek.  I just liked it when he was confronting real issues and not created ones.

I think he's on target.  At least I've been wanting to voice these issues for some time now, the same ones spoken of in both new songs even.  The Christians I live with and around typify to whom these may be intended (your's truly included).
