That’s their marketing schpiel, but the way I look at it is this: I order a lot of stuff from Amazon every year [to the point that I bet my UPS guy hates me], and I never, ever think about the shipping charge anymore. Doesn’t matter if I’m ordering a single CD, ten books, or heavy luggage—all the same. The only time I think about shipping prices are when I want the overnight shipment—mind you, not often, but every so often, it happens.

We had an intruder log in via SSH from Eastern Europe yesterday on one of the accounts, for the express purpose of inserting some extraneous JavaScript at the end of every index.php file on that account. I feel quite confident that this account was the only one affected by the intruder, as this is the only record of that IP address on the server and I have seen no other unusual activity. That said, you are encouraged to change your cPanel/FTP passwords on a regular basis and to make them difficult to guess. cPanel now has a function that helps evaluate the strength of passwords, and I have a simple technique for generating difficult-to-guess passwords.

Don’s getting settled back down in Portland following his wild ride from coast to coast. Here’s his latest update:

In the next couple weeks we will be revamping [donaldmillerwords.com] to reflect the fact I am no longer riding my bike across America. If you want to read more about that adventure, for now you can read back through the blog I kept while on the road. You can find that blog by (going to donaldmillerwords.com and) clicking “Track Don” and then “Where is Don Today.” We will be saving that blog in the archive section of the site, but will also be starting a new blog that I will keep regarding everyday life here in Portland.
We were told before we left on the bike trip that riding across America would change us, that we would never be the same. I know that is true for me. I look forward to updating everybody on what that different life looks like. For now, it involves no longer officing at home. I’ve set up an office at the Belmont Foundation office and will be working on all things in the community of other people who are doing remarkable and soulful work. After traveling across the country with the Ride:Well Team, I could no longer work alone. We weren’t meant to spend so much time alone, I don’t think.
i am still honored and perplexed that so many people would be interested in the work I am doing. I consider it a great honor. In the coming weeks, this site will evolve to better communicate what that work is, and how you can get involved. For now, though, thanks for your interest.

Matt Conner of Stereo Subversion recently interviewed Derek on a whole range of issues ranging from Noisetrade to his next album. Here’s what Derek had to say regarding the latter:
It’s pretty early on and, as usual, I’ve got pages and pages of ideas. It’s hard to say exactly where it’s going. I have a couple strong ideas, but I’m almost afraid to say because you never know once you get in and start. I thought Mockingbird was going to be full of different stuff. I intended that to be a record about art and politics and the combination of the two and it ended up just being about politics. [Laughs] There’s only one song about art on that record and it’s totally out of place.
Right now, if I had to give it broad strokes, I would say it’s going to be a record about race and sexuality - those are the big issues right now, but that’s what has been squarely in my line of sight for the last couple of years.
I know we typically post the week’s adds on Saturdays, but given that this show is Sunday, I figure advance notice is good. 
Andrew Peterson will be playing in Salem, Oregon for free on Sunday, August 10th.

Noistrade now has a blog! Derek has started posting a blog keeping us “noisetraders” up to date on all the various happenings around the NT universe. New artists and web buzz are just a few of the things popping up on the blog. Be sure to check it out.
Also of note is Derek’s post (!!! yes he actually posted on a blog!) in which he says that they are “a month in with over 50 artists and just under 30,000 albums downloaded.” He also mentions some new things coming up, some within the week. We here at dw.net will keep you guys updated!
